Description

I am a private tour guide who specializes in taking walking tours of Melbourne’s city grid, or CBD, or – to American visitors – the downtown area. I include public transport during my tours, which is great fun. I’m happy to take groups, couples or individuals. I’m available at short notice. I have deep interests in Melbourne and Australian history and politics, sport, music, literature and travel. I was a freelance journalist for many years — mostly a sports writer – but the decline of newspapers forced me to seek another career. I chose tour guiding because I figured it was another form of storytelling, in this case mobile storytelling. I like it very much. I’m a spruiker for Melbourne, but I would not call myself parochial. I don’t think one city is necessarily better than any other (even Sydney), but Melbourne is my city and I like showing people around here. I also like showing Melbourne people around their own city because they see it with new eyes. Buildings they’ve walked past for 30 years suddenly come to life. It’s quite rewarding. I have a view that Melbourne is held in suspicion by the denizens of other Australian cities. Our weather is different – we have a temperate climate, which northern folk just don’t understand. And our politics is different – Melbourne is the most progressive city. But an underrated aspect of difference is the darkness. Melbourne is a bluestone city. The other capitals are all sandstone cities. Melbourne looks and feels darker because of the bluestone. This creates the perfect atmosphere for the laneway culture to flourish. While the city was dead at night when I was young, it now comes to life after dark as people file into restaurants and bars. The foot traffic at night is now more plentiful than it is during the day. Which is amazing. The other cities have tried to emulate our laneway culture but it has not worked. Melbourne has aspects to it that the other cities just don’t have. Let me show you around.
