Koorie Arts is a place to learn, preserve, and value the Aboriginal culture and history. Koories, which refer to the modern Aborigines who live in Victoria and Southern New South Wales, possess a rich and vibrant past and it is here at Korrie Arts where this past is protected and promoted. The centre’s main aim is to create a society which pays respect to Aboriginal culture and incorporate it into Australian lifestyle.
Starting out as a little community organisation, Korrie Arts has developed into an icon of culture with three amazing gallery spaces showcasing pictures (paintings and works on paper), photographs, documentary material, and oral history recordings. These cultural pieces of work are maintained through museum-standard storage, documentation and conservation. The centre also offers Cultural Education Programmes to raise awareness and appreciation for the diversity of the Koorie culture and the importance of identity. Visitors can also buy Koorie and other Aboriginal works and products at the centre’s gift shop.
